The 1998 Michelin One Lap of America began on May 30th, covered aproximately
6,000 miles, and spanned over seven full days of racing throughout the United States.
The race, promoted by Brock Yates, evolved from the Cannonball Baker
Sea-to-Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, romanticized and immortalized
in movies via Cannonball Run and Gumball Rally.
The 1998 event had nearly 80 teams that travelled along highways and backroads
to doezns of race segments held on various racetracks. The event began at the legendary
Watkins Glen International Racetrack, Watkins Glen, NY.
The following day, Sunday, two time trials were run at Chris Pook's
Gateway International which is located outside of St. Louis, Missouri.
Monday the contestants were at Colorada Springs where they experienced the track
of Pikes Peak International Raceway. The hill climb was unavailable.
On Tuesday the cars raced around Phoenix International Raceway.
Wednesday was a layover on the way to the next track. Thursday included
bracket drag racing and a road course at Memphis Motorsports Park.
From there, the event went on to the main sponsor's (Michelin) test track,
located in Greenville, South Carolina. Saturday the finish brought everyone back to Watkins Glen.
Teams are given a set amount of time to get from one city to the next,
allowing them to travel at safe speeds within the law, and making stops for gas.
Once at each city, the events you compete in are against similar cars in your class.
